Alefacept

Alefacept review

Alefacept is an immune suppressive drug that can control the inflammation due to severe psoriasis. Clinical studies are being conducted to determine if it can effectively treat T-cell non-Hodgkin lymphoma and cutaneous T-cell lymphoma.

Alefacept is a drug distributed under the brand name Amevive that is marketed in countries like Australia, Canada, United States, Switzerland and Israel. It is a drug that is injected to patients suffering from psoriasis. It works in suppressing the immune system.

The most common dosage given to a patient is 7.5mg IV weekly for a period of twelve weeks. A 15mg IM can also be used for the same period. This standard dosage is closely monitored by the physician to ensure that treatment is progressing on the patient.

There are common side effects associated by using Alefacept. Some of these side effects include dizziness, itching, cough, nausea, sore throat, muscle pain, redness and swelling at the skin where the drug was injected.

There are also more serious side effects that can be fatal to the patient. This includes cancer, allergies, difficulty in breathing, rashes, infections and the decrease on the normal count of the immune cells.

If any of the side effects occur, you must immediately seek for medical help. This is very important so as to prevent any harmful effect that can be experienced by the patient.

Certain precautions should be observed before using this drug. Never administer the drug without consulting a doctor. Also inform your doctor if you have any other medical problems such as infections, immune system problem, and history of cancer, heart problem, lung disorder and other illnesses.

Avoid having any vaccines without consulting your doctor and keep away from people who have just taken their anti polio vaccine orally. It is also advised not to engage in any extreme activity and even driving because the drug can make you dizzy and affects your coordination. Never take drugs with similar effect as Alefaceft because it will greatly affect the normal function of the immune system.

You must follow the prescribed dosage and avoid changing the routine without informing your doctor.

If you are administering the drug by yourself, avoid injecting the skin that is swollen or injured. Clean the skin thoroughly where the drug will be injected to avoid any infections. Also store the drug in a safe place away from children’s reach.

Do not use the drug more than what is prescribed to avoid any fatal effect of overdose. In the case of overdose, report immediately to a medical professional. Overdose may show symptoms such as joint pain, chills and headaches.

Since the doctor prescribes this drug, you must never share it to anyone else even if you have the same illness. The dosage and drug may have adverse effect on some patients. It is only safe to use the drug if advised by a doctor.

Pregnant women and those who are breastfeeding should consult a doctor prior to taking the drug for medication. Though there are no clinical studies that may cause harm to the baby, it is still the best recourse to seek medical advice.
