Acuretic is a popular prescribed drug that functions by keeping the kidney from retaining too much water. Commonly called HCT, Acuretic is a water pill that allows the kidney to release excess water and sodium through the urine.
Acuretic is often prescribed to people with high blood pressure. It is also given to people with problems of fluid retention that can be caused by a variety of other diseases and conditions. It is also a useful treatment for individuals with kidney stones.
Acuretic can be taken orally either in tablet or liquid form. It is usually taken every morning. However, if you are required to take two doses a day, take one in the morning and another in late afternoon or early evening. If you take it at a much later time, your sleep will be disrupted by the frequent need to urinate.
Also, Acuretic only helps to manage high blood pressure but does not eliminate it. So, keep drinking the medicine even if you do not feel the symptoms of high blood pressure.
To maximize the effects of Acuretic, the doctor may ask the patient to follow a special diet. This would include low-salt or low-sodium diets. The doctor will also encourage the patient to eat more foods that are rich in potassium such as bananas, raisins and even orange juice. If needed, the patient may also take potassium supplements. A daily exercise or physical fitness routine is also advisable.
Increasing the potassium intake will prevent the patient from developing a condition called, hypokalemia. Hypokalemia is known to cause an increase in blood pressure as well as irregularities in the heart rhythm.
Before taking Acuretic, tell your doctor about the current medications you are taking. More importantly, inform him of any antibiotic that you are drinking. Also, if you have hypertension and are taking other forms of medication to manage the condition, tell your doctor immediately. If you take Acuretic along with your other hypertension medicine, their interaction may be hazardous to your health.
To avoid complications, do inform your doctor about any other disease which you may have had in the past. Cases of diabetes and gout should be reported. Past and present conditions of liver, kidney, thyroid or parathyroid disease should also be relayed to the doctor.
Also, if you are pregnant or if you are breastfeeding, inform your doctor as well. Acuretic may affect your baby’s health.
Moreover, if you also have to drink cholestyramine or colestipol, you must remember to take it after Acuretic. More specifically, drink Acuretic first. After AT LEAST one full hour, you can take cholestyramine.
There are also a few side effects that the patient needs to prepare himself for.
When using Acuretic, the patient may experience weakness in his muscles. In fact, he may even experience cramps in certain areas of the body.
The person may also feel pain in the stomach. Vomiting and appetite loss are common side effects. Diarrhea may also be experienced.
The patient may also feel lightheaded and dizzy. There may also be some hair loss.
