Acitretin is a drug considered as a second-generation retinoid that can be taken orally by people suffering from severe skin disease. It is capable of controlling and treating the effects of skin disease.
Acitretin is distributed under the trade name Soriatane and are used primarily in treating psoriasis patients. Psoriasis is a type of severe skin diseases that greatly affects the physical appearance of the skin.
Acitretin is considered a drug categorized as least toxic systemic that can treat psoriasis. The drug comes in a form of a capsule and can be taken orally.
Acitretin works by helping the skin to develop normally. The drug has long-term effect effectiveness but needs to be taken in order to maintain the skin’s healing progress.
The recommended dosage for adult patients with severe psoriasis is 25 to 50mg per day. The doctor may increase the dosage after four weeks of medication depending on the progress.
Other skin disease such as keratosis follicularis, bullous and other skin disorders may take up 25mg of dose per day.
It is best to consume the medicine after meals so as to avoid the effect of the medicine with empty stomach.
The doctor might change the dosage based on the effectiveness of the drug to the condition of the patient.
There are many unwanted side effects that are caused when medicating with Acitretin. Some of the side effects may occur to some patients but for others it might not. But it is highly suggested to seek immediate medical attention should there be any signs of side effects.
The most common side effects include vomiting, headache, back pain, joint pain, decrease hearing, sensitive to pain, skin redness, insomnia, muscle pain and many other side effects.
There are also rare side effects that include chest pain, affects vision, nosebleeds, paralysis, coughing of blood, tiredness, and change in skin color. Since one of the side effects is that it affects the vision, it is recommended to avoid driving and any extreme activities.

Before medication with the use of Acitretin, you should have a thorough consultation with your doctor. Acitretin is a prescribed drug and should never be taken without any advice from a qualified medical professional.
Medicating with Acitretin is not recommended to women who are capable of having a child unless all other alternative drugs have failed. Acitretin is also not advisable for pregnant women because it might cause birth defects and may harm the baby.
In the case that a woman needs the medicine, the patient should be prevented from getting pregnant through methods of child control. The patient should do this a month prior to taking the drugs. The birth control should remain for at two years or more after stopping the intake of Acitretin.
Individuals who are using Acitretin are advised not to donate blood to anyone for two to three years after medication. It is also recommended to avoid alcoholic drinks during and after treatment.
Patients should also avoid too much exposure with cold weather, sunlight and wind because the skin can easily be irritated as a result of medication.
