  Acamprosato

Acamprosato

Acamprosato review

Acamprosato is a prescription medication distributed under the brand name Campral that is given to patients being treated for alcoholism. Excessive intake of alcohol causes side effects to the functions of the brain. Acamprosato helps the brain to regain its normal function. It also helps patients to avoid alcohol consumption. However, Acamprosato is not intended to cure the effects of withdrawal symptoms associated with the treatment of alcohol addiction.

Patients being treated for alcohol addiction should take Acamprosato. This drug should be given as the patient is undergoing a regular routine of counseling. Acamprosato is effective in curbing the urge of an individual to consume alcohol.

Acamprosato is in tablet form and is taken orally. The drug can be taken three times a day with or without food. It must be taken at about the same time each. For example: at breakfast, lunch and dinner so it would be easy to remember the proper time for each dose.

Take the medicine with a glass of water and avoid chewing or splitting the tablet. Continue taking the medication unless advised differently by your doctor. Do not alter the prescribed dosage.

While taking Acamprosato provides medical benefits for the patient, there are also known side effects associated with using this medication. Some of the common side effects include upset stomach, dizziness, itchiness, diarrhea, loss of appetite and weakness. Though many of the symptoms are not dangerous, it is important to inform your doctor immediately when you experience any side effects.

Some patients may develop depression when taking the drug. Other symptoms may include a feeling of guilt, loss of interest, upset stomach, constipation, feeling of sadness, worthlessness, lack of energy, anxiety and tendency towards thinking about committing suicide.

Precautions should be undertaken when taking Acamprosato. You must inform your doctor if you have any allergies to any medications. Also inform your doctor if you are taking any other vitamins, anti-depressants or food supplements.

If you have certain health problems like heart disease, kidney problems and other diseases, it will be best to inform your doctor prior to taking the medication Acamprosato.

Women who are breast-feeding or pregnant should notify the doctor of their present condition. Patients who are about to undergo surgery should first consult a doctor before taking Acamprosato.

Since Acamprosato affects the brain it may affect the ability of a person to make proper decision and affect proper coordination. It is strongly advised to refrain from driving any vehicle or operating machines that might lead to accidents.

Over dosage of Acamprosato may lead to serious medical conditions and requires immediate medical attention. If you have missed a dose and the next dose is about to be taken, it is better to miss one dose and then take the next dose at it’s regular interval instead.

While on medication, it is best to maintain your sessions with your counselor. This will help you regain your normal life and keep you more in control of yourself. This will also help you to overcome withdrawals associated with treating alcoholism.
