The brain’s ventricles are adjoined to each other as well as to the central canal of the spinal cord. The first and second ventricles, which are the two lateral ventricles, are located in the same hemisphere as the cerebrum, just inferior to the corpus collosum. The third ventricles is positioned between the thalami in the diencephalon. The interventricular foramen is a narrow, oval opening that connects the first and second ventricles to the third ventricle. In the brain stem, positioned between the pons and the cerebellum, is the fourth ventricle. Adjoining the third and fourth ventricle is the mesencephalic aqueduct, which traverses the midbrain to complete the link. One of the responsiblilities of the fourth ventricle is communication with the spinal cord’s central canal. The fourth ventricle allows the release of cerebrospinal fluid via subarachnoid space. Three foramina assist in this process, the median aperture, the medial opening, and the lateral apertures. The cerebrospinal fluid once again becomes waste product and is returned to the circulatory system via the arachnoid villi.
