The superior vena cava receives blood from the brachiocephalic veins as well as azygos system of veins which ascend from the posterior thoracic wall. The very important azygos vein runs along the superior wall of the thorax and the abdomen and then traversing the right side of the vertebral column it rises through the mediastinum. It is looking to join the superior vena cava which if level with the fourth thoracic vertebrate. Ascending lumbar veins are conjoined with the azygos system and provide drainage for the lumbar and sacral areas.
