The sternal extremity of the clavicle and the manubrium of the sternum join together to create the sternoclavicular joint. While technically a gliding joint, this joint enjoys a wider than normal range of motion. An articular disk that is located within the joint capsule can be attributed for the extra range of motion. The sternoclavicular joint is strongly supported by 4 ligaments which also help to improve flexibility. Both the anterior and posterior sternoclavicular ligaments extend from their grounding points and respectively reach from the sternal end of the clavicle to the manubrium. Designed to bind together the sternal ends of the clavicles, the interclavicular ligament extends through and holds the clavicle ends firmly in place. Protruding from the costal cartilage and reaching to the costal tuberosity, the costoclavicular ligament provides additional structure and support.
