The completely mature sperm cell is referred to as the spermatozoon. Its tadpole shape is literally microscopic and has been measured at about .06 millimeters long from head to tail. The head of the spermatozoon is ovular while the tail is an elongated flagellum. The head of the sperm cell is devoid of mitochondria but is equipped with a nucleus that houses 23 chromosomes. The acrosome, which refers to the very tip of the spermatozoon’s head, is coated with special enzymes which assist in breaking down the outer layer of an egg for fertilization. A core of filament creates the inner portion of the flagellum which is then wrapped with spirals of various mitochondria. The responsibilities of the mitochondria include creating the necessary energy the sperm cell requires for self propelled locomotion. Just like a tadpole, the flagellum acts like a swimming tail and is able to create locomotion via lashing motions in the various bodily fluids that occur during sexual intercourse. Sperm cells are able to create about 3 millimeters per hour in an unassisted state of locomotion.
