Located on the anterior of the distal femur, the patella is constructed of a triangular sesamoid bone of significant size. Tension and stress on the patella tendon determine the response and action of the patella. The base is rather broad and its inferior apex finalizes in a near point. The medial and lateral femoral condyles interface with the articluar facets of the same surface in order to provoke response. The primary responsibility of the patella includes protection of the knee joint. It also serves to help in strengthening the patella tendon. The quadriceps relies on the patella for leverage concerning the femoris muscle when extending into a straight leg position.
