The foot’s two arches are formed by the structure and design of the bones throughout the foot. The ligaments and tendons of the foot stabilize the basic formation that the bones create. The arches have little rigidity and are known to flex appropriately when pressure is applied. The longitudinal arch is segregated into two divided segments, the medial and the lateral foot so to speak. The portion of the foot that appears to be more elevated is considered the medial foot.

If picturing the foot as the human body looks down, the basic structural keystone of the medial foot originates with the calcaneus and slopes upward to the talus and then descends back to the metatarsal bones. The lateral foot is comprised of the fourth and fifth metatarsals, the cuboid, and the calcaneus. The cuboid serves as the lateral foot’s keystone of structural basics. The width of the foot is known as the transverse arch and is created by the arrangement of the calcaneus, navicular, as well as the cuboid bones. The base of the entire phalanges creates the anterior portion of the transverse arch. Pes planus, which is commonly called flat feet is caused by a weakened condition of the ligaments or tendons which hold the foot in its proper shape.
